OFFICIAL: Former Kaizer Chiefs star lands new PSL club

Betway Premiership side Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke for a second spell, with the 2026/27 season gathering momentum.

The 27-year-old midfield dynamo rejoined Stellies on a free transfer after spending the previous campaign in the wilderness following his abrupt exit at Marumo Gallants without kicking the ball.

His first spell at Stellenbosch came during the 2023/24 season on the heels of parting ways with Chiefs, but was released in the same term for alleged misconduct, and ultimately played in the second tier.

Notably, he was part of the squad that won the inaugural Carling Knockout Cup under then-Stellies head coach Steve Barker in December 2023 - the club's first and sole major trophy in the topflight.

Now, he has returned to the Cape Winelands outfit where he will work under experienced mentor Gavin Hunt, with the team looking to mount a respectable campaign after finishing ninth last term.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC. It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back,” Matsheke told Stellies' media team.

"I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more. I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there's a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.

Whether Matsheke will command a regular place in the starting XI remains to be seen, having made a total of 12 appearances for the club during his first stint in Maroon.
