Official: Rulani Mokwena takes charge of Pyramids FC

This is one of the biggest moves of the African transfer market.Pyramids FC officially announced on Friday evening the signing of Rulani Mokwena. The 39-year-old South African coach succeeds Krunoslav Jurčić.

Mokwena has signed a one-year contract with the option for an additional season. He arrives in Cairo with an impressive track record on the continent.

Mokwena is regarded as one of the brightest emerging coaches in Africa and made a strong impression with Mamelodi Sundowns. With the "Brazilians," he clinched the 2023 CAF Champions League title and secured the South African Premier Division in 2023 and 2024. He also brings North African experience, having worked as an assistant to Pitso Mosimane and passed through Wydad Casablanca and Mouloudia Algiers, with whom he won the Algerian Super Cup. His most recent stint was with Ittihad Tripoli in Libya.

At just thirty-nine, Mokwena is spearheading an ambitious project. After the team’s triumph in the CAF Champions League and the 2025 African Super Cup, Pyramids FC is determined to cement its continental dominance. The primary target remains the Egyptian Premier League, where the club has finished runners-up for five consecutive seasons and is now aiming to finally capture the coveted title.
