Pape Gueye reveals the true story that brought him to Villarreal!
A Senegalese midfielder has now opened up about how Marcelino was the reason behind his departure from Marseille to Spain. It all traces back to a promise the Spanish coach made in 2023 when he resigned from his position at Marseille.
At that time, Marcelino assured Pape Gueye that he would come back for him as soon as he took over another club. True to his word, Marcelino never forgot that commitment. Just a few months later, after being appointed head coach at Villarreal, he made good on his pledge. The Spanish side presented Gueye with a project that he felt was perfectly suited to his growth as a player.
Looking back, Gueye recalled: "I remember that as he was leaving, Marcelino said to me: 'As soon as I take charge of a club, I'll definitely give you a call.'" He continued: "The story unfolded a few months later; Villarreal offered me a clear plan: to help me grow with the team. At Marseille, there were lots of stars. At Villarreal, it was the first time I was going to be at the forefront of the action."
