Real Madrid: Mourinho rails against Vinícius Júnior's suspension
Interview
José Mourinho made no secret of his displeasure after Vinícius Júnior’s suspension was announced just two hours before the Champions League match against AS Roma. The Real Madrid manager mainly criticised the timing chosen by the Spanish Federation’s Disciplinary Committee to make its decision public.
Four-match ban for Vinícius
The Brazilian winger was sanctioned after being sent off during the La Liga match against Villarreal. He had pulled Nathan Saliba’s hair before strongly protesting the refereeing decision.
The Disciplinary Committee handed him a four-match league suspension: two for his action towards his opponent and two more for his protests. The ban will notably rule him out of the Clasico against FC Barcelona, scheduled for October 25, as well as matches against Sevilla FC, Racing Santander and Valencia.
Mourinho criticises the timing of the announcement
Questioned by Movistar Plus Deportes before Real Madrid’s European trip to Rome, José Mourinho chose to take aim at the timing of the decision rather than its substance.
I think this question should be put to the Disciplinary Committee. Why publish the sanction at that precise moment? Why not do it this morning or tomorrow morning? Why two hours before an important match for Real Madrid?
For Mourinho, the challenge will now be managing Vinícius’ absence in the league, particularly in the Clasico. For the Brazilian, this episode also serves as a reminder that reactions towards referees and opponents can have significant sporting consequences.
