Rulani Mokwena guides Pyramids to impressive win in CAFCL
Rulani Mokwena guided Pyramids FC to a 2-0 victory over Gor Mahia in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round at Nyayo National Stadium.
The 2025 African champions made their intentions clear from the onset as Walid El Karti broke the deadlock five minutes from the first whistle.
Pyramids doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time through Mahmoud Saber, who rounded up the scoring as the teams canceled each other in the second stanza.
Mokwena's men return to Egypt with two crucial away goals ahead of the second meeting of the two-legged tie at 30 June Air Defence Stadium at the weekend.
The Kenyan champions now face an uphill battle away from home as they will have to score two unanswered goals to take the tie to penalties or three goals to reign supreme.
Notably, the winner of the match will square off against El Merriekh SC Bentiu of South Sudan or Somalia's Heegan SC in the second preliminary round.
Mokwena has been tasked with clinching the prestigious CAF Champions League trophy, winning the league title and domestic cups in Egypt.
Whether the South African mentor will meet the objectives set by the demanding Pyramids hierarchy remains to be seen, with the 2026/27 season gathering steam.
