Senegal: Cheikhou Kouyaté announces his international and professional retirement
Cheikhou Kouyaté has announced the end of his career. The former captain of the Teranga Lions has brought his professional and international career to an end after 92 appearances for Senegal.
Kouyaté turns the page at 36
Cheikhou Kouyaté published a message on his social media accounts announcing his decision. He said: “I am leaving professional football... The greatest moment of pride for me will always be wearing the Senegal shirt.” The midfielder first wore the Senegal shirt in February 2012. He made his last international appearance in March 2024. He finishes with 92 caps and 4 goals for the Teranga Lions. The greatest achievement of his career was winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, which he won in Cameroon.
A heart condition hastens his decision
Cheikhou Kouyaté recently revealed on Walf TV that he has suffered from a heart condition since birth. The condition prevented him from continuing his club career. The former player featured for Belgian side Anderlecht, West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest in England. He retires from football at the age of 36.
