The Senegalese Football Federation clarified the viral videos of players undergoing tarmac security checks in Raleigh on 7 June.

The viral uproar

Social media erupted after footage surfaced showing the Senegalese squad being physically frisked next to their aircraft.

Fans quickly labeled the incident as a sign of disrespect toward the elite African squad as they touched down for their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.

The official clarification

However, according to an official press release from the Senegalese Football Federation, the narrative surrounding the footage is completely inaccurate.

The governing body confirmed that the security screening did not occur upon arrival at their base in San Antonio. Instead, the required checks took place right before departure at the Raleigh airport terminal.

A calculated logistical move

The federation explained that this was a highly organized VIP logistical maneuver. To optimize travel time and minimize player fatigue, the squad's bus bypassed the standard public passenger terminal entirely driving directly from their hotel to the airport tarmac.

Because the delegation skipped the usual indoor security gates, the mandatory police and aviation checks had to be conducted directly at the base of the aircraft before boarding their private charter flight.

Strict aviation protocols

Adding essential context to the situation, United States federal aviation laws mandate that all passengers, even heads of state and elite sports teams traveling privately, must undergo standard TSA screening if departing from a commercial airport facility.

By arranging tarmac level screening, the Senegalese delegation actually received preferential treatment. This allowed them to avoid crowded public terminals ensuring the squad reached San Antonio smoothly without any security breaches or delays.
