Wilfried Kanga close to a return to the Pro League

Wilfried Kanga is set for a return to the Belgian Pro League, just one year after leaving Standard Liège. According to several sources, the Ivorian forward is expected to sign with Gent in the coming days, arriving from Croatia.

After a challenging year, a promising new chapter appears to be opening for Wilfried Kanga. The former Standard Liège striker experienced a turbulent season: first loaned to Cardiff City in the Championship last summer by Hertha Berlin—where he failed to find the net in 16 appearances—then transferred to Dinamo Zagreb in January 2025 for €1.7 million.

In Croatia, he featured in 16 league matches, starting 10 of them and scoring 3 goals—solid results that hint at a strong 2025/26 campaign. However, despite being under contract until 2027, the Ivorian may be heading back to Belgium, where he revived his career with a season-long loan at Standard Liège (37 matches, 12 goals, 3 assists).

Ivan Leko wants to rely on his former striker

It was under Ivan Leko’s guidance that Wilfried Kanga made his mark with Les Rouches during the 2023/2024 season. The Croatian tactician was appointed head coach of KAA Gent on June 4, 2025. To spearhead his project with the Buffalos, the 47-year-old manager is keen to count on his former Liège forwards. While he is trying to lure Ibe Hautekiet, he has also added Wilfried Kanga to his shortlist.

According to Belgian media, Gent has reached an agreement with Dinamo Zagreb and is awaiting the Ivorian striker for a medical before finalizing a three-year deal.
