The final Round of 16 clash at the World Cup will see Colombia take on Switzerland—a rematch of their memorable encounter at the 1994 World Cup.

It was June 26, 1994, in the United States when the Cafeteros defeated the Swiss 2-0 with goals from Hernán Gaviria (44’) and Hárold Lozano (90’). However, that victory wasn’t enough, as Colombia finished bottom of Group A and were eliminated. Switzerland, finishing second, advanced to the next round before bowing out to Spain.

Apart from that lone World Cup duel, the teams have met three times in friendlies, with a balanced record. The sides played out a 1-1 draw in February 1985. Switzerland edged a 3-2 win in February 1991, while Colombia claimed the latest meeting 3-1 in March 2007.

Switzerland

After a disappointing draw against Qatar (1-1), Switzerland bounced back to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina (4-1) and Canada (2-1), topping Group B with 7 points. The Nati then took care of business in the Round of 32, overcoming Algeria (2-0).

Colombia dominated Uzbekistan (3-1) and DR Congo (1-0) before settling for a draw with Portugal (0-0). The South Americans then knocked out Ghana (1-0) in the Round of 32.

Here’s the full head-to-head history between the two nations:

February 1, 1985 – Friendly: Colombia vs Switzerland (2-2)

February 3, 1991 – Friendly: Colombia vs Switzerland (2-3)

June 26, 1994 – World Cup (group stage): Switzerland vs Colombia (0-2)

March 25, 2007 – Friendly: Colombia vs Switzerland (3-1)
