The France-Paraguay clash in the Round of 16 at this 2026 World Cup has taken a political turn.

Indeed, following racist remarks made by Paraguayan MP Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappé after the France-Paraguay match (1-0), the Real Madrid star fired back publicly on his social media. The French Football Federation (FFF) swiftly followed their captain's lead, announcing legal action. On Monday night, President Emmanuel Macron broke his silence.

"The President of the Republic stands with Kylian Mbappé and the French national team in the face of the racist attacks directed at the Les Bleus captain. The Paraguayan president has written to the French president to condemn these statements, as did the Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs," the Elysée said in a statement sent to the media.
