Another setback for Gouiri… but will he make the World Cup?

Amine Gouiri is facing another injury setback at a critical moment in the season casting doubt over his availability for Algeria ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Olympique Marseille forward suffered a hamstring injury during a recent Ligue 1 match raising concerns just weeks before the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Fresh injury at the worst possible time

Marseille confirmed in an official statement that Gouiri picked up a right hamstring injury after being forced off during the league clash against Lorient. The Algerian striker has since begun his recovery programme, but the timing could not be worse.

He was already ruled out of Marseille’s 26 April fixture against Nice missing another key moment in a season repeatedly disrupted by physical setbacks.

World Cup hopes under threat

Gouiri had been targeting a strong finish to the season to secure his place in Algeria’s squad for the World Cup.. a tournament the national team is preparing for as one of Africa’s representatives.

Algeria will be competing in the World Cup for the fifth time in their history, with their best performance remaining the run to the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014 under Vahid Halilhodzic.

For Gouiri the tournament carries added importance after he missed the last Africa Cup of Nations due to a shoulder injury another blow suffered while on international duty.
