Union Saint-Gilloise: Mohammed Fuseini violently attacked and robbed in Brussels

Mohammed Fuseini was attacked by several masked individuals in broad daylight on the streets of Brussels. The Ghanaian winger for Union Saint-Gilloise was robbed of his luxury watch, phone, and wallet, but fortunately escaped with only minor injuries. One suspect has been placed under arrest.

Union Saint-Gilloise has experienced a turbulent start to the week. Their Ghanaian forward, Mohammed Fuseini, 24, was the victim of a violent assault on the streets of Brussels on Sunday morning. Targeted by a group of masked men, the player was forcibly pulled from his vehicle before being robbed of several valuables, including a Rolex watch, his mobile phone, and his wallet. He was hospitalized as a precaution but fortunately suffered only minor injuries.

A targeted attack in broad daylight

According to information from Het Laatste Nieuws, confirmed by BRUZZ and Union Saint-Gilloise, the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. Surveillance footage shows several individuals surrounding Fuseini’s vehicle. Three of them allegedly dragged him out of his car, strangled him, and tore away his personal belongings. The assailants then fled with their loot, leaving the player on the ground.

Union Saint-Gilloise spokesperson Thijs Roelen described the event as a “violent incident.” The club stated that the player was taken to the hospital for examinations before being assisted by Brussels police. Despite the psychological shock, Fuseini returned to training the very next day. “Physically, the damage is not too serious,” the club reported.

An investigation moving quickly

The Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest of a suspect, now charged with violent theft in an organized group and placed under arrest warrant. During a search of the suspect’s home, investigators recovered several items reported as stolen.

The investigation also revealed that two other people were victims of similar assaults the same day as they were approaching their vehicles. The criminals mainly targeted luxury watches, phones, and other personal effects. Two victims were even declared temporarily unfit for work due to the violence they suffered.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the other members of the criminal group. The prosecutor’s office declined to provide further information in order to preserve the proper conduct of the investigation.

A troubling context

According to La Capitale, Mohammed Fuseini and his new South African teammate Relebohile Mofokeng reportedly spent part of the night in a venue on Avenue Louise before the assault. The same source claims that Mofokeng witnessed the incident without intervening and filmed it. However, investigators have not confirmed whether this footage played a role in identifying the suspect.

Having joined Union Saint-Gilloise in 2024 from Sturm Graz, Mohammed Fuseini is regarded as one of the Belgian club’s most promising young talents. Over two seasons, he has played 68 matches, netting 14 goals and providing 3 assists.
