Coventry City back in the Premier League after 25 years: Lampard makes history
Coventry City is officially back in the Premier League after a 25-year absence. Frank Lampard accomplished the feat this past Friday.
It’s official, historic, and long-awaited. Coventry City is back in the Premier League after 25 years away, securing promotion on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Blackburn Rovers’ ground with a draw (1-1). Bobby Thomas netted the equalizer in the 84th minute with a powerful header, delivering the crucial point that mathematically guaranteed the Sky Blues’ promotion. With 86 points on the board and just three games left, the club can no longer be caught by Millwall, who sit third with 73 points.
Lampard, architect of a miracle
It all began in November 2024: Coventry was languishing in 17th place in the Championship when Frank Lampard arrived under far from enviable circumstances. The former Chelsea and Everton manager—whose appointment was initially met with skepticism—has since transformed the club into the undisputed leader of the division. According to Sky Sports, Lampard said in his post-match interview:
"I am proud. Sometimes, managers only talk about the players, but I am proud, and I’m proud of myself, the staff, and the boys."
The achievement of a lifetime
Visibly moved to tears, Lampard wanted to put this achievement into the context of his entire career, according to Sky Sports:
"So this is one of my greatest achievements. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of great Chelsea teams. Winning the Champions League and domestic titles was incredible. Sometimes, I could thank Didier Drogba or John Terry for that."
A sincere and rare admission from a man who, this time, built everything with his own hands.
