FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket sales hit by chaos as fans face delays and errors

FIFA encountered technical issues on Wednesday 1 April as it resumed ticket sales for FIFA World Cup 2026, just hours after confirming the full list of 48 qualified team.

Fans attempting to secure seats for the tournament were met with long queues and system errors during the opening phase of sales.

Long waits & system confusion at launch

The latest sales phase began at 11:00 AM Eastern Time under what FIFA described as a “last minute sales phase”

However instead of accessing tickets directly, many users were redirected to a separate waiting list tied to a different sales category reserved for fans of recently qualified teams.

The confusion was compounded by extended waiting times. Some users who joined the queue at the start reported delays of up to 90 minute before gaining access raising concerns about the platform’s capacity to handle demand.

FIFA did not immediately explain the cause of the malfunction but later in the day indicated that the issue had been resolved and the system was functioning normally.

Limited availability & phased release

FIFA confirmed that not all remaining tickets for the 104 match scheduled across the United States, Mexico and Canada between 11 June and 19 July 2026 were made available in this phase.

Instead additional batches will be released progressively in the coming months.

This marks the fifth stage of ticket sales following multiple earlier phases including pre sales for Visa cardholders in September, early draws in October, a random allocation period between December 2025 and January 2026 and a short 48 hour release window in late February.

New system & pricing model

For the first time, this sales phase allows fans to select specific seats rather than applying for tickets within general categories.

FIFA is also continuing with its dynamic pricing model, with matches spread across 16 host cities .. 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

During a previous sales window, ticket prices ranged between $140 and $8,680 reflecting demand and match importance.

Affordable tickets & resale concerns

Following criticism over pricing, FIFA confirmed the allocation of $60 tickets to each participating national association, aimed at loyal supporters.

Each team is expected to receive between 400 and 700 such tickets per match.

FIFA also operates official resale platform taking 15% commission from both buyers & sellers.
