Taking aim at foreign rivals

Following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup 2026 final, the political fallout has been swift and bizarre. Rather than analyzing tactical missteps on the pitch across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Argentine President Javier Milei has pointed the finger at international sabotage.

According to the French outlet Foot Mercato which cited an explosive interview with Radio Mitre, Milei alleged that a coordinated, heavily funded smear campaign was launched to damage the reputation of the Argentine squad.

He specifically accused the governments of Brazil and Mexico alongside the US Democratic Party, of bankrolling the operation.

Diplomatic tensions boil over

Milei doubled down on his bold assertions by claiming that 25% of this alleged propaganda budget came directly from the Brazilian government.

Unsurprisingly, he offered zero concrete evidence to back up these massive allegations. The controversial leader also used the platform to take a swipe at "progressive intellectuals" claiming these political factions are actively trying to suppress his ideological movement under the guise of football criticism.

These comments add serious fuel to an already raging diplomatic fire. Relations between Buenos Aires and Brasilia have severely deteriorated recently, driven by Milei’s repeated public attacks on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
