Manqoba Mngqithi's Young Africans secured a crucial away goal in their 1-1 draw with Gaborone United in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round on Saturday.

The Tanzanian champions were given a run for their money as they went into the half-time break trailing, courtesy of a goal from Ambrosius Amseb in the 32nd minute.

Gaborone United, however, couldn't hold on for the victory, with Mngqithi's men salvaging a draw deep in stoppage time to tilt the tie in their favour with an away goal.

Yanga will welcome the reigning Botswana champions in the return leg in Tanzania next weekend, with both teams looking to progress into the next phase of the competition.

Notably, Sean Connor's troops will have to score in East Africa to overturn the deficit, as failure to make the net bulge would see Yanga advance if the match ends deadlocked.

Mngqithi, meanwhile, has been tasked with mounting a strong run in Africa's premier club competition, with the club frequently crashing out in the group stages.

The last time Yanga made it past the group stages in the Champions League was back in the 2023/24 campaign, where they finished as runners-up to Al Ahly of Egypt.

Whether the South African tactician will meet the objectives set by the club's hierarchy remains to be seen, with competition for continental glory rife.
