After five consecutive defeats in all competitions, the latest against PSG (1-2) at the Vélodrome on Sunday, Olympique de Marseille are going through an especially difficult period. Pressure is mounting on Bruno Genesio, as the possibility of the coach resigning is now being discussed.

OM failed to take advantage of Le Classique to halt their poor run of form. Beaten 1-2 by Paris Saint-Germain at the Vélodrome on Sunday, September 20, on matchday 5 of Ligue 1, the Marseille club have now suffered five consecutive defeats.

Before PSG, Marseille had already lost four consecutive matches in all competitions. The run began in Ligue 1 against Monaco (0-2), followed by defeats to Paris FC (2-3) and Rennes (0-1). On Thursday, Marseille then suffered a heavy 1-4 defeat away to Beşiktaş in their Europa League opener.

The record is all the more concerning given that OM had begun their league campaign with a comprehensive victory over Strasbourg (4-0). After five matchdays, Marseille sit 17th.

Resignation now being discussed

It is in this context that the question of Bruno Genesio’s future has returned to the forefront. According to reports published on Sunday evening, the Marseille coach could consider submitting his resignation depending on how events unfold. He is reportedly unhappy with certain aspects of the sporting project and the assurances he is said to have been given.

This information does not mean that Genesio has decided to leave OM. No resignation has been announced, and the coach remains in charge.

The contrast with his comments on Thursday is notable. After the heavy defeat to Beşiktaş, Genesio was asked about the possibility of leaving. “It wouldn’t achieve much to walk away,” he replied, while acknowledging that it was an “especially difficult” period.

OM already under pressure

The defeat to PSG therefore came at the end of an especially difficult week, with two losses in three days. It extends a run that has now left Genesio facing a very tense sporting situation.

Having arrived in Marseille this summer, the 60-year-old coach experienced his first Le Classique in the OM dugout. His future could now depend on the next results, as the club must quickly halt this run of defeats.
