Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 1-0 defeat against Zambia's Red Arrows on Saturday 17 October 2026, in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Alassane Diarra scored the only goal in the 75th minute converting from close range following a corner to give the Zambian hosts a valuable advantage ahead of the return fixture in South Africa.

The result leaves Fernando Da Cruz's side needing to overturn a one-goal deficit to reach the group stage of the 2026 /27 competition.

Red Arrows vs Kaizer Chiefs: How the match unfolded

Red Arrows made the more threatening start, with Angel Lubamba firing over the crossbar in the fifth minute before Owen Mwamba also missed the target from distance.

The hosts enjoyed periods of territorial control but Chiefs gradually settled into the contest limiting their opponents' opportunities.

The visitors suffered an early disruption when Thabiso Monyane was forced off through injury around the half hour mark, with Thulani Mabaso coming on as his replacement.

Mduduzi Shabalala threatened for Chiefs in the 35th minute sending a powerful long range effort wide after a counterattack.

Red Arrows continued searching for an opening, with Ackim Mumba also shooting over before half time. Neither team found a breakthrough, leaving the score 0-0 at the interval.

Diarra's 75th minute goal decides the contest

The second half produced more attacking opportunities, although both teams initially struggled to find the finishing touch.

Chiefs threatened shortly after the restart while Lubamba missed another opportunity for Red Arrows around the hour mark, heading wide from a delivery involving Mumba.

Da Cruz introduced Wandile Duba and Etiosa Ighodaro in place of Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi around the 70th minute attempting to refresh his attack.

However, the decisive moment arrived five minutes later.

Red Arrows won a corner on the right which Mumba delivered into the penalty area. Following a scramble among the defenders, Diarra reacted to turn the ball into the net.

The goal proved decisive as the Zambian team secured a 1-0 first-leg victory.

Tactical analysis: Where Kaizer Chiefs struggled

Da Cruz selected a 4-3-3 formation, with Luke Baartman replacing Wandile Duba as the central striker in the only change from the starting team that faced Stellenbosch earlier in the week.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa anchored the midfield, supported by Paseka Mako and Reeve Frosler while Shabalala and Vilakazi occupied the wide attacking positions.

According to the club's official team announcement, the selection was designed to maintain continuity despite the demands of continental competition.

Chiefs managed to frustrate the hosts for much of the afternoon but failed to make their attacking opportunities count.

Their biggest setback came from a defensive situation rather than sustained open-play pressure. The failure to clear Mumba's corner allowed Diarra to score the winner.

That sequence highlighted the importance of defending second balls and maintaining organisation inside the penalty area.

The attacking concerns were particularly relevant given the issues previously raised by assistant coach Dillon Sheppard who had identified defensive efficiency and attacking finishing as areas requiring improvement following Chiefs' recent domestic draws.

What happens next for Kaizer Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs will host Red Arrows in the second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday 23 October with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 South African time.

A victory by two goals would send Chiefs through, while a one goal victory would leave the aggregate scores level and require the tie to be decided under the competition's applicable knockout rules.

Da Cruz's team now face the challenge of combining greater attacking efficiency with defensive discipline against a Red Arrows side that has demonstrated its ability to capitalise on set pieces.

Chiefs reached the Confederation Cup group stage last season but missed out on the quarter-finals. Their latest continental campaign will end before the group stage unless they overturn the deficit in Durban.

The challenge facing Da Cruz is also significant given the squad's recent injury problems, which were highlighted in Foot Africa's report on the squad selected for the trip to Zambia.
