(Video) Al Ahli beat Al Duhail 1-0 after extra time thanks to Mahrez free kick
Riyad Mahrez delivered decisive moment as Al Ahli secured place in the AFC Champions League Elite quarter finals on Monday 13 April with 1-0 extra time win over Al Duhail in Jeddah.
The Algerian winger scored from a free kick late in second period of extra time to settle a tight last 16 tie.
Deadlock broken deep into extra time
The match remained goalless throughout the 90 minute, with both sides struggling to convert their chances in a cautious contest played under the centralized tournament format in Saudi Arabia.
Al Ahli were handed a major opportunity early in extra time but Ivan Toney failed to convert from the penalty spot in final minute of first extra period keeping Al Duhail in the game.
As the match edged toward penalties, Mahrez stepped up. In the 117 minute, he curled in a precise free kick to finally break the deadlock and send the home crowd into celebration.

The goal underlined Mahrez’s importance in decisive moments, with the Algerian once again proving his ability to influence high pressure matches.
It was a disciplined performance from Al Ahli overall who controlled long stretches but had to remain patient against organized Al Duhail side.
With the win, Al Ahli advance to the quarter finals where they will face Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta’zim.
