Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he will continue his career with the Netherlands national team. At 35, the Liverpool defender was convinced by his first discussion with new head coach Xavi.

A decision made quickly

After Ronald Koeman’s departure following the World Cup, the Netherlands handed control of the national team to Xavi. For Van Dijk, the meeting with the new coach quickly dispelled any doubts.

The defender explained that he felt the confidence and respect he was looking for from the very first minutes. The Dutch captain has therefore decided to continue the adventure and is already looking ahead to the national team’s upcoming fixtures.

A new beginning with Xavi

Van Dijk currently has 96 caps and 13 goals for the Netherlands. He remains one of the national team’s key players, while also continuing to play a major role at Liverpool. Since joining the Reds in 2018, the defender has made 380 official appearances, scoring 36 goals and providing 16 assists. His start to the season with Liverpool has also been marked by a return to defensive solidity, with three consecutive clean sheets in the league.

Xavi’s first match in charge of the Netherlands will be highly anticipated. The Dutch will face Germany in the opening match of the Nations League. The game will also allow Van Dijk to reunite with Jürgen Klopp, now Germany’s head coach. At 35, the Dutch defender therefore intends to write a few more chapters with his national team.
