England has every reason to worry ahead of its Round of 16 clash at the World Cup against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. Over the past 56 years, El Tri has suffered defeat in this iconic venue only twice.

You have to go back to September 2013 to find the last time Mexico lost at the famous Azteca. That defeat came against Honduras during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. The only other loss was to Costa Rica in 2001, also during World Cup qualifying at this stadium.

The Mexican national team boasts an incredible record at this stadium: 69 wins in 89 competitive fixtures.

Mexico

In this World Cup, apart from the victory over South Korea played in Guadalajara, Mexico won all three of its matches at the Azteca: a 2-0 opener against South Africa, a 3-0 win over Czechia, and a 2-0 triumph over Ecuador in the round of 32.

Thomas Tuchel must feel some trepidation as he prepares to take on Mexico in their fortress, which sits 2,200 meters above sea level—a punishing altitude for visiting teams unaccustomed to those conditions.
