After the World Cup, Lionel Messi sets his sights on another tournament with Argentina

Lionel Messi still hasn’t announced his international retirement. Now, one last competition is emerging as a credible goal before his final farewell.

Back home in Rosario after the heartbreaking loss to Spain in the final, Lionel Messi continues to keep everyone guessing about his future with Argentina. Despite being 39 and the emotion surrounding what seemed to be his last World Cup appearance, the Albiceleste captain hasn’t made anything official.

His physical condition also calls for caution. Messi just wrapped up the 2026 World Cup with eight goals and four assists in eight matches. He now brings his tournament records to 21 goals and 12 assists.

Copa América 2028 as the final challenge?

Playing at the 2030 World Cup at age 43 seems highly unlikely. However, Copa América 2028 appears to be a more realistic prospect. Messi is under contract with Inter Miami until December of that same year, which, in principle, guarantees his competitive continuity.

His role, however, could evolve. Argentina will need to gradually prepare his succession, reduce his playing time, and allow a new generation to take on more responsibility. Messi could thus become more of a protected leader than an automatic starter.

The future of Lionel Scaloni is also a key factor. The coach’s contract expires at the end of 2026, and his continuation is not yet guaranteed. After 21 years with the national team, Messi will decide for himself when it’s time to go. Still, one last Copa América could provide a more natural exit than the painful World Cup final of 2026.
