Algeria team affair – Yacine Adli: Petkovic, don’t cross that red line!

Yacine Adli now wants to play for Algeria after publicly choosing France. A dramatic change of heart that simply cannot and should not go unnoticed.

With less than two months to go before the 2026 World Cup, Yacine Adli is back in the spotlight with a statement that leaves everyone speechless. The former AC Milan player, now languishing at the bottom of the Saudi league with Al-Shabab, 12th in the Saudi Pro League, has suddenly announced his desire to wear Algeria’s colors. This is the same Adli who, in March 2024, confidently told the cameras:

“I am an Algeria supporter, but as a player, I chose France. I chose France for the higher level.”

A choice he described as final, made “out of pure respect for Algeria.” Respect, really?

An opportunist who remembers his roots when it suits him

Yesterday, in an interview, Adli completely changed his tune. He expressed regret for his past statements, revealed he had talks with Vladimir Petkovic, his former coach at Bordeaux, and dropped this line:

“Wearing the Algerian shirt would be the most beautiful thing for me.” Touching, on paper.

Except the timing is just too perfect to ring true. When France no longer wanted him and his career stalled, Algeria didn’t even exist for him. Now, with a World Cup on the horizon, the Fennecs suddenly become “the most beautiful thing”. It’s a blatant calculation, and Algerian fans aren’t fooled.

Petkovic, don’t cross that red line

The message is clear: Yacine Adli is not wanted in the green and white, no matter what. Calling up a player who publicly put Algeria second, who chose France “for the higher level”, would be an insult to everyone who’s always dreamed of wearing our sacred colors.

Worse, it would open a dangerous precedent, giving all dual-nationality players a roadmap: reject Algeria, wait until things don’t work out elsewhere, then come back. The national team is sacred. It deserves better than opportunists just passing through. Adli can support the Fennecs from his living room, just like millions of proud Algerians will do this summer.
