Ibrahim Mbaye marked his first start for Aston Villa with an assist. The young Senegal international helped the Villans beat Coventry (3-1) on Wednesday evening in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Named in the starting lineup by Unai Emery, Ibrahim Mbaye was directly involved in Aston Villa's second goal. In the 40th minute, the Senegalese forward provided the assist for Ross Barkley, allowing the visitors to regain the lead.

Tammy Abraham had opened the scoring in the 7th minute before Victor Torp equalised for Coventry. Abraham then scored his second goal of the evening in the second half, helping Aston Villa secure a 3-1 victory and qualify for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The match marked Mbaye's first start since arriving in England. The Senegalese player had previously made his first appearances for Aston Villa in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest.

Eight seasons at Paris Saint-Germain

Before joining Aston Villa, Mbaye had spent eight years at Paris Saint-Germain. He joined the Parisian academy at the age of 10 and progressed through the various age groups before breaking into the first team.

On 16 August 2024, against Le Havre, he became the youngest player to start a Ligue 1 match for PSG, at 16 years, 6 months and 23 days old. He subsequently signed his first professional contract with the Parisian club and won the Titi d'Or, an award presented to the best young player in the PSG academy.

During the 2025-2026 season, Mbaye gradually earned more playing time under Luis Enrique. He also experienced major European nights with PSG, notably in the Champions League.

He notably started against FC Barcelona in Paris's 2-1 victory on 1 October 2025. His spell with the capital club concluded with several domestic and European titles.

A permanent transfer to Aston Villa

Aston Villa officially announced Ibrahim Mbaye's permanent transfer from Paris Saint-Germain on 1 September 2026. The English club represents his first professional experience outside France.

His departure came after several years in Paris and appearances for the PSG first team. He has now joined an Aston Villa side competing in several competitions and managed by Unai Emery.

For Mbaye, the match against Coventry therefore represents an important first benchmark at his new club. Starting for the first time, he provided an assist and helped Aston Villa qualify for the next round of the Carabao Cup.

A Senegal international

After representing France at youth level, Mbaye chose to represent Senegal at international level. He has since joined the Lions of Teranga and taken part in the country's major international fixtures.

His arrival at Aston Villa now opens a new chapter in his career. His first start allowed him to make a direct impact, while competition remains fierce within the English squad.
