According to journalist Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, contacts between the two clubs have already begun—initiated by Barcelona’s administration, which recently reached out to United’s leadership to propose a move for the 26-year-old Spaniard.

For Barça, parting with Torres would serve a clear financial purpose. His departure is said to offer significant relief to the club’s wage structure, in turn granting them greater maneuverability in the upcoming transfer window.

United, for their part, are said to be genuinely keen on securing Torres’ services. However, those close to the negotiations emphasize that the English club views any potential deal as a standalone operation, with no connection to ongoing discussions surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future.

Yet the Red Devils are not alone in their interest. Arsenal are also tracking the former Manchester City man closely, and sources suggest they could make their own move should their pursuit of Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez fail to materialize.

Torres has been a steady contributor for Barcelona this season, having made 40 appearances across all competitions while recording 16 goals and one assist. Under contract with the Catalan side until 2027, he is currently valued at around €50 million by Transfermarkt—a figure that could spark a compelling transfer battle between two of England’s biggest clubs.
