"This could be the last one"
Speaking to SAT.1 after lifting the trophy, the 40 year old veteran was remarkably candid when asked if this might be his final Super Cup appearance.
"It could be, it could be.. Now is the right time to enjoy everything again. Then I will see how the season goes. But basically, I already think that this could be the last one" Neuer admitted.
Neuer revealed he had heavily considered retiring before signing his contract extension in May which runs until 2027.
"I probably would have stopped in 85 percent of cases but with this team, the staff and the coaching setup, it’s simply fun" he explained.
"We always have the potential to compete for all titles. Therefore, this team and the structure we have fall into the 15 percent where I said: I absolutely must continue"
Passing the torch to Jonas Urbig
As Neuer embarks on his 21st Bundesliga season, aiming to cap it off with another UEFA Champions League title, Bayern’s hierarchy has already established a clear succession plan.
A tactical agreement is reportedly in place for 23 year old Jonas Urbig, formerly of FC Köln, to regularly rotate with Neuer this season.
This phased, cooperative transition is specifically designed to ease the highly rated youngster into the undisputed number one role ahead of the following campaign.
