Breaking: Mamelodi Sundowns announce the signing of a new young star

Mamelodi Sundowns have made it official: Amajita captain Lazola Maku is now a Brazilians player.

The 19-year-old arrives at no cost, having been without a club since Siwelele FC released him at the close of last season.

Word of Maku's move to Chloorkop had already made waves in the media only a week ago, and those reports have now been confirmed.

After his release, the versatile teenager travelled to Austria for trials in the hope of securing a new home for the current campaign, but nothing materialised. His career then took a turn for the better when Raymond Mdaka named him in the Amajita squad for the U20 COSAFA tournament, which South Africa went on to win.

His performances there caught the eye, prompting Sundowns' scouting department to recommend his signing — and Maku has now put pen to paper on what is understood to be a long-term deal with the African champions.

A LONG-TERM MIDFIELD ANSWER FOR THE BRAZILIANS

Still only 19, Maku has a bright future ahead of him and is viewed as a long-term solution for Sundowns in the defensive midfield role.

With the likes of Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas getting older, the club will need younger faces to gradually take over from them.

As The South African reported last week, the Tshwane giants are also expected to confirm the arrival of another midfield anchor, Jhegson Mendez, in January.

The 29-year-old Ecuador international brings far more experience than Maku, but he cannot serve as a long-term answer for the club.
