The margin for error has all but disappeared for both Algeria and Jordan at this 2026 World Cup. Defeated in their opening matches, both teams are set for a high-stakes clash now entrusted to an experienced European referee.

After a tough start to their 2026 World Cup campaign, marked by a heavy 3-0 defeat to Argentina and a Lionel Messi hat-trick, Algeria now faces a crucial encounter against Jordan. With both teams having lost their first matches, they are under pressure to react if they want to keep their qualification hopes alive.

For this fixture, scheduled for June 23 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, FIFA has officially named the officiating team. Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will take charge as the main referee, assisted by his compatriots Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič. Jamaican Oshane Nation will serve as the fourth official, while Trinidadian Caleb Wales is designated as the reserve assistant referee.

However, both teams will be under immense pressure heading into this Group J showdown. A victory could reignite their qualification ambitions, especially as the World Cup's new format allows the eight best third-placed teams from the twelve groups to advance to the round of 32.
