Exclusive Interview

African clubs certainly held their own on the opening day of the group stage at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns delivered Africa's first three points of the tournament, thanks to their narrow victory over South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai.
Meanwhile, Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly settled for a goalless draw against American side Inter Miami (0-0), while Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia) and Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) both suffered 2-0 defeats to Flamengo and Manchester City respectively.

To take stock of African participation after the first round of group matches at the Club World Cup, “Foot Africa” sought the expert opinion of renowned African journalist Micky Jnr, who kindly responded to our editorial team’s questions.
Which African team impressed you the most on the opening day of the group stage?
Mamelodi Sundowns looked like the most complete African side so far. Their players were calm, focused, and tactically disciplined. They put in a solid performance against Ulsan Hyundai, showing efficiency on the ball and resilience off it…

Which African player impressed you the most on the opening day of the group stage?
Without a doubt, Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. He managed to keep a clean sheet against Ulsan Hyundai—his composure and distribution under pressure were excellent. He has confirmed his status as one of the top African keepers at the moment.
Which supporters stood out to you the most during the Club World Cup?
The Wydad Casablanca fans. Even far from home, their passion was palpable. Loud, devoted, and loyal—they turned the stands into a Moroccan fortress during the match against Manchester City.
After the first round, which African club do you think has the best chance of reaching the round of 16?
In my opinion, Mamelodi Sundowns are the best equipped to reach the next round. With a win already under their belt, they’re leading their group. If they keep their focus, they can go even further.
Which African club coach looked the most convincing to you after the first day of the Club World Cup?
For me, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso has brought balance and clarity to his team. His tactical reading and ability to keep his players focused deserve praise. Sundowns played like a well-oiled machine—you could see his influence everywhere.
What improvements do African clubs need to make before the second round of matches?
First, more clinical finishing in front of goal—Wydad, for example, wasted too many chances against Manchester City. Also, they must tighten up at the back; fast counterattacks from opponents exposed a few weaknesses in African defenses. Finally, better game management is essential—African clubs must control the tempo and avoid naïve decisions at key moments.
Which African breakthrough talent has been the biggest surprise for you at this Club World Cup?
Sundowns forward Iqraam Rayners has been everywhere. His energy, passing quality, ability to break up play and take on defenders really made a difference. He’s shown he’s ready for a bigger stage.

Can we dream of a “Morocco 2022” scenario for Africa at this Club World Cup?
It’s not impossible. If Sundowns remain consistent and another African team finds its groove, a Morocco 2022-style run is possible. But it will take more composure in front of goal, real tactical maturity, and unwavering mental strength. The potential is definitely there.
