Press reports have revealed that Chelsea has already begun working to shield its stars from interest by Premier League rivals; among the players the club aims to protect is Josh Acheampong, a defender with immense potential.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool and Arsenal are interested in signing the young defender; despite his contract running until 2029, competition for his services from Premier League giants has recently intensified.

The defender has developed significantly over the past year; this progress has made him one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League, and he is now viewed as a key option in the Chelsea squad.

Chelsea wants to extend beyond 2029

Word is, Chelsea are keen to tie Acheampong down on better terms — and they'd ideally like to keep him around until 2032.

They're not alone in rating him, though. Over the summer, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and Bournemouth all came knocking with enquiries, and across the past year Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli have also been circling. Chelsea's answer, time and again, has been the same: he's not for sale.

What's telling is that Xabi Alonso is firmly on board with the new deal talks. He sees the youngster as a piece of his long-term puzzle, largely because the lad can slot in at centre-back, right-back, or just about anywhere across the back line.

Alonso has already spoken warmly about him this season, saying that when Acheampong plays with belief and a bit of bite, he ticks a lot of the boxes you'd want in a modern defender.

The Chelsea boss also pointed to how comfortable he looks with the ball at his feet and how easily he adapts to different roles — comments that went up on Chelsea's official site.

And really, that's the profile every big club is chasing right now. He's athletic, technically sound, and already looks at home in senior football. And at just 20, there's still plenty of growth left in him.
