Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan sends warning after Egypt’s AFCON qualification

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan insisted the Pharaohs fully prepared to face any opponent in quarter finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following Monday’s hard fought victory over Benin.

The seven time African champions booked their place in last eight after 3 -1 extra time win against Benin in the Round of 16 of the tournament currently being staged in Morocco.

Egypt will now face the winner of the clash between Ivory Coast & Burkina Faso.

Speaking at the post match press conference,, Hassan praised his players commitment while expressing sadness over injury setback.

“I dedicate this victory to the Egyptian people,” Hassan said. “At the same time , I'm deeply saddened by Mohamed Hamdy’s ACL injury. He is very important player for us.”

“We are happy with the win and qualification. This is one of the strongest AFCON tournaments in recent years,” he added. “Benin are respectable team and played very well. As I always say there are no easy teams in Africa.”

Injury updates

Hassan also provided updates on Trezeguet:

“Trezeguet ankle ligament injury and we're working to get him ready for the upcoming matches” he explained. “I respect all teams but as Egypt ,,we always aim to win and fight for the title.”

“Football's about performance not history”

The former Egypt striker emphasized that reputation alone does not decide matches at this level.

“Football does not recognise history.. it recognises performance on the pitch,” Hassan said. “Our players have shown great spirit and I thank them for everything they have given so far in this tournament.”

He also highlighted the depth within his squad.

“We have 27 top level player. From tomorrow we will begin preparations for the quarter final. We are ready to face anyone.”

Hassan clarifies gesture toward fans

Hassan also addressed viral video showing him gesturing toward the stands while celebrating Mohamed Salah’s late third goal.

“The video was misunderstood ” he clarified. “The Moroccan fans especially in Agadir , have been very supportive of Egypt. I would never criticise or attack them.”

“I thank the Moroccan supporters & the Egyptian fans who were in the stadium backing us.”
