Official: Egypt lose key defender after devastating injury at AFCON
Egypt have been dealt major setback at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after medical tests confirmed that defender Mohamed Hamdy has suffered complete anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
The injury occurred during Egypt’s 3-1 victory over Benin in the Round of 16 clash played at the Agadir Stadium.
Official medical diagnosis confirmed
Egypt national team doctor confirmed the severity of the injury in statements released via the federation’s media center.
“The scans carried out on Mohamed Hamdy confirmed rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee,” Egypt doctor said.
As result, Hamdy’s AFCON campaign has officially come to an end and the player is expected to be sidelined for prolonged period.
Emotional exit during Benin match
Hamdy sustained the injury in first half and was forced off the pitch on stretcher, visibly distressed during physically demanding match that extended to extra time.
Head coach Hossam Hassan withdrew the left back at the interval introducing Ahmed Fatouh as his replacement.
Despite the injury setback, Egypt went on to secure qualification with goals sealing 3-1 win over Benin.
Quarter final await Egypt
The Pharaohs will face the winner of the Cote d’Ivoire vs Burkina Faso encounter in the quarter finals scheduled to be played on Saturday 10 January.
However Hassan now faces defensive reshuffling following Hamdy’s absence.
