"He Proved Them Wrong": The miraculous health update on Ajax legend Abdelhak Nouri

The brother of former Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has provided an emotional update on the 27 year old's condition, confirming he is stable and actively communicating with his family despite the severe brain damage he suffered in 2017.

A long road to stability

During a candid interview with Matthijs van Nieuwkerk on the program Schuilen in Schoonheid, Abderrahim Nouri reflected on the family's journey since Abdelhak collapsed due to cardiac arrest during a pre season match in 2017.

The incident left the promising Dutch talent with permanent brain damage and resulted in a prolonged coma.

However, Abderrahim revealed that his brother's current state is far better than the initial prognosis suggested.

"His condition is good and he is in a stable state especially if we compare it to the first period... When my brother moved from Austria to the Netherlands national team, that was truly a very strange time. If you compare it to the current situation, things are going much better" Abderrahim explained.

The power of non-verbal communication

While Abdelhak remains unable to speak, his family maintains a strong connection with him through non-verbal cues. Abderrahim emphasized that the former footballer is fully aware of his environment.

"There is a form of communication, but he cannot speak like you and I do. We are absolutely convinced that he hears and understands everything and follows what is going on around him... And vice versa, we try to read and understand his thoughts" he stated.

Defying medical predictions

The most striking revelation from the interview was Abdelhak's resilience in the face of grim medical forecasts. When asked about his brother's future, Abderrahim admitted the uncertainty but expressed immense pride in how Abdelhak has already surpassed doctors' expectations.

"I wish I knew. But I can say: there were doctors who predicted a certain life expectancy but he proved the opposite. And we as a family are also happy with that" he noted.

Abderrahim acknowledged the difficult position medical professionals face when delivering news, though he wishes they would leave more room for hope.

"I understand the doctors, and I don't want to say anything negative. They never really speak positively about their expectations. If they are too positive, people will blame them for it. But on the other hand, I think it is enough for them to simply say 'this is the situation, we do not know what will happen in the future and we hope for the best'"

"My brother has already proven things that doctors said were impossible" he ended.
