Juventus have issued a firm condemnation of their own supporters after a minute of silence honoring Italian football and Inter Milan icon Sandro Mazzola was disrupted prior to Sunday’s Serie A match against Atalanta in Turin.

Disruption of league-wide tribute

The Italian football federation had mandated a minute of silence across all Serie A matches over the weekend to honor Mazzola, widely regarded as one of the country's greatest ever players who passed away on Friday at the age of 83.

However, the tribute was interrupted at the Allianz Stadium when a segment of home supporters turned their backs to the pitch and sang chants praising Juventus legends.

The hostile response stemmed from the long-standing, intense rivalry between Juventus and Inter Milan, the club where Mazzola spent his entire senior career.

Club statement and disciplinary consequences

Juventus addressed the incident through an official statement, distancing the club from the behavior in the stands.

"No rivalry can justify disrespect during a minute of silence" the club stated adding that "honoring the memory of people in moments of tribute is a shared responsibility that transcends allegiances and colors"

The actions of the ultras could carry direct sporting sanctions for the Turin club. Italian disciplinary authorities are reviewing reports from the match, with Juventus facing the prospect of a financial penalty or a partial stadium closure affecting the Curva Sud, where the chants originated.
