Erling Haaland’s substitution during the 2026 World Cup quarter-final clash against England left Norwegian fans stunned. But for Ståle Solbakken, the decision was inevitable.

The Norwegian superstar was taken off in the 106th minute, with the match still deadlocked in extra time. This was a first for Haaland at this World Cup, as he had previously finished every game he started. After the match, Solbakken explained that his striker had reached his physical limits:

I probably should have taken him off ten minutes earlier. It wasn’t a tough decision—he had already given everything.

The Norwegian coach also revealed that Haaland felt a slight thigh discomfort in the second half, which made the substitution even more necessary. Despite Norway’s elimination by England, Haaland leaves the 2026 World Cup with a phenomenal record: 7 goals in 5 matches.
