After undergoing back surgery following the World Cup, Rodri remains at the heart of Manchester City’s project. For now, Enzo Maresca is brushing off any potential move to Real Madrid as mere speculation.

Rodri’s future continues to be a hot topic in the transfer market. Speaking at a press conference, Enzo Maresca reaffirmed that the Spanish international is still essential to Manchester City. The Italian manager is awaiting his return after surgery and a well-earned rest for the World Cup winner.

Maresca still counting on Rodri

"Every manager in the world wants Rodri," Maresca reminded everyone. The midfielder underwent back surgery on Monday, which reportedly went off without a hitch. He is now expected to continue his rehabilitation before gradually rejoining the squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Real Madrid still lurking

Real Madrid is said to have already reached a verbal agreement with Rodri on a contract running until 2030. However, Los Blancos still need to convince the Manchester City hierarchy, who are determined to keep hold of their midfield maestro.

José Mourinho has reportedly made Rodri his top target to strengthen Real Madrid’s midfield. With a contract until 2027, the Spaniard could become the cornerstone of Mourinho’s likely 4-2-3-1 double-pivot, alongside Jude Bellingham, allowing Arda Guler to operate as a number 10 behind Mbappé. Yet, no official negotiations between the two clubs have been confirmed so far.

For the record, Real Madrid finished last season in second place in La Liga, trailing champions FC Barcelona by eight points. The Merengues are also coming off two trophyless seasons, a first in the club’s recent history.
