Champions League: Geny Catamo scores in Sporting’s win over Galatasaray
Trailing Galatasaray, Sporting CP quickly responded through Geny Catamo. The Mozambique international equalised in the 27th minute of the first matchday of the Champions League league phase, setting the Portuguese club on the way back into the game.
The goal confirms Catamo’s growing influence on the European stage. In his third Champions League season, the Sporting player has now reached three goals in the competition. He also has two goals and three assists in all competitions since the start of the season, according to the tally used.
Continued progress in the Champions League
Catamo opened his European account on 10 December 2024 away to Club Brugge. The Mozambican gave Sporting the lead in the 3rd minute, before the Belgian side turned the game around to win 2-1.
The following season, he once again made his mark against Olympique de Marseille. Coming on in the second half, Catamo equalised in the 69th minute after the French side had taken the lead through Igor Paixão. Alisson Santos then secured victory for Sporting in the 86th minute (2-1).
A few weeks later, the Mozambican also played a decisive role in the 3-0 victory over Club Brugge. His shot, which was parried by the goalkeeper, allowed Geovany Quenda to open the scoring, before Catamo provided an assist for Luis Suárez’s second goal.

Catamo decisive once again on a big night
Against Galatasaray, his equaliser once again demonstrated his ability to make an impact in major European fixtures. Deployed in an attacking role, Catamo offers pace, dribbling ability and plenty of activity in the final third.
After his goal, Sporting eventually took control of the match. Luis Javier Suárez converted a penalty in the 57th minute before Rodrigo Zalazar made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute.
Sporting therefore secured a 3-1 victory and made an ideal start to their European campaign. Geny Catamo, meanwhile, joins the list of African players who have already scored in this new edition of the Champions League.
His goal was also the first of the evening, as representatives of the continent are already making their mark on the European stage.
