FIFA accused of favoring Messi: Ronaldo’s indirect reaction

Without posting a single comment, Cristiano Ronaldo has ignited a heated controversy over Lionel Messi and Argentina’s World Cup run.

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again set social media ablaze. The Portugal captain liked a video posted on Instagram by the Spanish show Espejo Público, where journalists accuse FIFA of favoring Lionel Messi and Argentina during the 2026 World Cup.

The video even goes as far as to call the international governing body a "mafia-like and shameful organization", and claims that Gianni Infantino wanted to hand Messi another world title. Ronaldo, however, did not add any comment to his 'like.' As such, this gesture cannot be considered an official accusation from the Portuguese star.

A gesture heavy with meaning

This interaction comes in the wake of several refereeing controversies that accompanied Argentina’s campaign. Decisions against Algeria, Egypt, and Switzerland were notably challenged by players, coaches, and numerous observers.

La Albiceleste eventually reached the final, only to lose 1-0 after extra time to Spain. Nevertheless, Ronaldo’s gesture was enough to reignite suspicions of favoritism toward FIFA.

In a context defined by his eternal rivalry with Messi, every move by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is closely watched. His 'like,' whether intentional or not, has given new life to an already viral controversy.
