Barcelona took decisive step toward the La Liga title on Saturday 4 April 2026 after Robert Lewandowski’s late goal secured 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid stretching their lead at the top to seven point.

The breakthrough came just minutes from time, when Lewandowski converted in the 87th minute to settle a tense contest that had swung both ways at the Metropolitano.

Momentum swings in chaotic first half

Atletico had looked in control for much of the opening period and were rewarded in the 39 minute when Giuliano Simeone fired them ahead.

But the lead lasted only moments. Barcelona responded almost immediately, with Marcus Rashford equalising in the 42 minute to shift the tone of the match before the break.

The half ended in further drama as Atletico were reduced to ten men deep into stoppage time, with Nico Gonzalez shown a straight red card .. a moment that changed the dynamic of the game.

Barcelona take control after the break

With the numerical advantage, Barcelona dominated possession in second half pushing Atletico deeper and forcing them into defensive approach.

Chances began to come more regularly and the pressure finally told late on. Lewandowski’s goal in the closing stages reflected Barcelona’s growing control and proved enough to secure crucial three point.

Title race tilts in Barcelona’s favour

The win takes Barcelona to 76 point opening significant gap over Real Madrid who had earlier fallen 2-1 to Mallorca.

With just a handful of matches remaining, the result places Barcelona firmly in command of the title race.

Atletico Madrid meanwhile remain fourth on 57 point, with their hopes of closing the gap to the leaders fading further.

Focus shifts quickly to Europe

There is little time to dwell on the result, with both sides set to meet again on Wednesday 8 April in first leg of their Champions League quarter final at the Spotify Camp Nou.
