By edging out Scotland 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ismael Saibari, Morocco has set a new unbeaten record, becoming Africa’s top national team in this regard, ahead of Cameroon and Senegal.

Six—that’s the number of consecutive matches without defeat in the group stage of the World Cup (3 wins, 3 draws) recorded by the Atlas Lions. This is the longest unbeaten streak for an African nation, surpassing Cameroon (5 from 1982 to 1990) and Senegal (5 from 2002 to 2018).

Saibari’s goal is the second fastest ever scored by an African player in the tournament’s history, just one second behind Gyan Asamoah’s (Ghana) strike, who found the net after 68 seconds against the Czech Republic in 2006.

This goal allowed the Atlas Lions to remain unbeaten for a sixth straight group stage match—an achievement no other African team has ever managed in World Cup history.

Morocco’s run began at the 2018 World Cup, when they held Spain to a 2-2 draw on matchday 3 of Group B. The streak continued at the 2022 World Cup with a goalless draw against Croatia (0-0), followed by victories over Belgium (0-2) and Canada (1-2).

In this edition, Achraf Hakimi and his teammates held Brazil to a 1-1 draw before defeating Scotland 1-0, moving up to second place in Group C with an inferior goal difference compared to Brazil, who beat Haiti 3-0 from Friday night into Saturday.
