After Les Bleus’ victory over Paraguay (1-0), the racist comments directed at Kylian Mbappé continue to spark outrage—even reaching the United Nations.

The controversy keeps growing. Following statements from the French Football Federation, Emmanuel Macron, the Paraguayan government, and Gianni Infantino, it’s now the UN Human Rights Office’s turn to firmly denounce the attacks against the French captain. In an official statement, spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan condemned the remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, highlighting them as a symptom of a much broader problem.

“The racist and dehumanizing comments made against French footballer Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla are despicable, and unfortunately, are not an isolated incident,” he stated.

The UN went even further in its assessment: “The reported racist incidents at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are part of a wider phenomenon affecting football and sports in general. Public figures bear an even greater responsibility to fight racism, discrimination, and hate speech in their public statements.”

The controversy erupted after France’s qualification, when the senator posted several openly racist messages targeting Kylian Mbappé, to which he responded directly on X.
